About Salinity

About The Boat.

She’s a beautiful boat.  Not too big, not too small. She sleeps 6 people “comfortably” and anyone who’s spent any time on a sailboat understands that.  By “comfortably” we mean — you fit.  You can lie down and maybe roll over once, depending upon your sleeping area.

Built in 1979 by S2, the 11.0a (11 meters with aft cockpit), only about 320 S2 11.0 boats were made between 1977-1979.  Read all about the S2.

In the spring and fall, when it’s less humid and evenings are cooler, it’s positively dreamy.  But when it’s hot and humid, all the portable fans in the world aren’t enough.  But it’s all part of the scene.

We bought Salinity in 2018. Found her on eBay. Yes, eBay.  She was in Georgetown, Maine which is a good 8-hour drive on a good day.

About Us

We are two self-employed sailors, on the edge of an empty nest…. in those pre-retirement years where you want to cram in as much fun stuff as you can because you start to **really** realize that your body isn’t going to hold up forever.

Watching our 96-year-old neighbor — as independent as he is — struggle to get out of a chair makes you want to enjoy what you have while you have it.

So here we are, a couple of Gen-Xers, in our early 50’s.  We both work full-time but have the privilege (as many others do now) of working from anywhere, so we are renovating and restoring Salinity and plan to use her as our “mobile office.”  As long as we have a wifi connection, we’re set.

Lou's Sailing Experience

Lou spent time on the water using his uncle’s 34-foot O’Day sailboat, sailing in Raritan and Barnegat Bays in New Jersey.

Kate's Sailing Experience

Kate’s first experience sailing was while on vacation in St. Lucia with cousin Judy…. where she tried windsurfing for the first time and was hooked.  Upon returning home, she bought a a full quiver  —  board, rig (mast, boom, 2 sails, 2 fins, and a harness) and spent the next couple of years sailing it.  Took a sailing course later on intending to sail boats, but got married and had some kids, sold the windsurfer and spent 20 years working and raising a family.

Sailing Together

Twenty years!  Yes, twenty years after our initial meeting and first date where we talked about our joint love of sailing, we finally sailed together.  We joined the Raritan Yacht Club’sColgate Program” where you can essentially borrow a 25′ sailboat.  It’s a great entry into owning a boat, and a year or two later, we found Salinity. Although Kate wasn’t looking to buy a boat, but Lou was!
